Dig up your own excavation

Learn about Archaeology at ancient Olympia.

What you can expect?

Can you see anything?” asked Lord Carnarvon. “Yes, wonderful things!” replied Howard Carter with his eye pushed against the ancient wall to look inside the burial chamber of King Tut through a tiny peephole. Now, try to think of the feeling when Heinrich Schliemann laid eyes on the golden mask of Agamemnon, when Charles Champoiseau heard his workers saying “Sir, we found a woman”. If you can relate to this thrill of discovery then let your inner archaeologist unleashed at the grounds of Ancient Olympia.

Start early in the morning, like a proper archaeologist, and get to the site where you and your team will apply your skills in situ. Let your trench leader guide you through the dos and don’ts of your day, and have a hands-on experience of archaeology at the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Your co-archaeologist will introduce you to the basics of the Science of Archaeology, familiarise you with the founding principles of excavating and guide you through your day of discovery and wonder. Dig through the layers of history, and with your brush and trowel, uncover mosaics of heroes and gods, artefacts buried for thousands of years, or ruins of long-gone buildings.

This mock excavation, held at a fully-organised space under the supervision of real archaeologists and properly trained staff, is the best way to commence your day excursion at the Panhellenic site of Olympia. Ideal for families and friends, this activity is suitable for everyone, regardless of their age and cultural background. All you need to have with you is the thrill of discovery, the appetite for knowledge, patience and of course, lots of imagination. After having experienced the reality of an archaeologist, it is time for you to visit the site of Olympia, one of the most important sites of the ancient world that shaped and continues to do so, the development of Western civilisation. It is certain that now everything will make absolute sense to you.
