Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good cause. These unique natural rock formations vertically ascend to the sky, overseeing the stretching valley of Kalambaka starting at their foothills. • Set on an approx. 4-hour hiking tour to the Meteora countryside and follow the ancient trails paved by the first monks that transformed the area into one of the oldest and most important monastic centres in Europe.
  • Meet the history and tradition of Meteora through the vivid narration of your expert local guide.
  • Introduce yourselves to the Greek Orthodox etiquettes and customs.
  • Pass through medieval ruins and deserted monasteries.
  • Visit a still operating monastery (Grand Meteoron or Varlaam) and live a glimpse of the humbling monastic way of life.

What you can expect?

Have the chance to sink into the beauty of Meteora countryside, through a 4-hour hiking tour. Meteora is a unique geological formation nowhere else to be found around the world. Shaped through the passing of millions of years, the rocks of Meteora reach for the skies as pillars connecting Heaven and Earth. With human habitation since prehistoric times (the world-renowned Cave of Theopetra is located nearby) this UNESCO World Heritage Site has an abundance of natural and cultural attractions for you to explore on foot. Follow the lead of your experienced hiking guide and follow the trails the first monks paved to inhabit the pillars of Meteora.

On your way to the rocks, pass through the dense forests of the region, learn about the local ecosystem and explore the medieval ruins of deserted monasteries such as the monastery of Ypapanti. As you are approaching the walls of the pillars, check how the monks used caves and gaps on the rocks as monastic cells to ensure their isolation and true communication with God. Enter the monastery of the Grand Meteoron (or the monastery of Varlaam in case the first one is closed), and live in first hand how the monks of Meteora lead a simple and humble life focused on their religious path. Learn about the tradition of the monastery, its vast history and gaze at the priceless ancient artefacts saved in the monastery’s chambers as well as its Byzantine architecture. Leave the monastery by using the traditional path carved into the rocks by the monks before the construction of modern commodities.
