If you recently exchanged vows of eternal love, congratulations to the beginning of your new life! What comes next is a memorable honeymoon, right? But how to choose the right place? Normally, you must have never heard of a really popular Greek song called “Cruise” by Vangelis Germanos, according to which, Santorini is the ideal destination for couples deeply in love -and especially penguins, or whatever kind of love bird you identify yourselves with. Just listen to the song & you’ll know what we mean.

Those who took this song seriously never regretted it. In fact, they always try to find reasons to relive their first spellbinding experience as newlyweds in Santorini multiple times after that!

Once you come to Athens, the island is easy to reach by boat, departing from the port of Piraeus, or you can just fly there from Athens International Airport.

Apart from swimming, sunbathing, relaxing and the islands’ main attractions, there are some special ideas and activities to engage in and make every moment on this island together with your significant other priceless.

Enjoy the sunset
And we do not mean in Oia nor in Fira. On the edge of a cliff, on the southern tip of Santorini near Akrotiri, lies the lighthouse, or “Faros” in Greek. Locals claim that this is the best spot to watch the sunset. Faros was built in 1892 and is used today by the Greek navy. If you happen to be there during August, you will be able to visit the building on the International Lighthouse Day. If not, the idyllic scenery alone will soothe your souls.

Hike the paths
Santorini has many traditional paths -the islands’ old path network- which connect the villages. Nowadays these are still used by the inhabitants, as well as by the visitors for hiking and exploring. A route that follows the curve alongside the caldera is the one that connects the four major settlements of Fira, Firostephani, Imerovigli and Oia (about 3km long). If you are not that much into hiking, you have the option of wandering around the alleys and the pathways of Oia.

Cruise the Aegean sea
Inspired by the song or not, sailing around the caldera or the neighboring islets and islands - especially in the evening while the sun is setting- is too romantic to miss! Various sailing tours are available to choose from. In other words, arrange your unique cruise according to your preferences and sail like the “Pirates of the Aegean” -the alternative Greek title for the novel “Archipelago on Fire” by Jules Verne.

Watch a movie at the open air cinema
In Kamari, there is a small romantic cinema where you can spend some time watching a movie and drinking your cocktails under the stars. On the site www.cinekamari.gr you can see the program.

Exchange gifts
Go shopping in Fira and Oia where you can find plenty of shops, a wide variety of products and just the perfect gift for your mate. Handicrafts of delicate art, clothes, shoes, accessories and jewels are mind-boggling. Carry the energy of Santorini everywhere you go by wearing jewelry from volcanic rocks!

Visit the most romantic bookstore
“Atlantis Books” in Oia. The name is interesting -since Santorini was once considered to be the island of lost Atlantis but this was never verified. The bookstore has a collection of various books in English and several other languages. In this “hobbit cave” there are cool reading spots and the companion of jazz music to relax you.

Stay in a cave hotel or a windmill hotel

Most couples choose to stay in a hotel on the west side of the island, close to the caldera. Imerovigli is a really nice option, with less hustle. Two very interesting suggestions for newlyweds would be to stay in a cave hotel, or in windmill hotel -both inspired by the traditional local architecture- like Yposkafo and Golden Sunset Villas in Oia.

Eat and Drink
Traditional cuisine is more than worth a try. You absolutely need to book a private, romantic dinner with a view to the caldera and the volcano -just ponder where else in the world you could do this. Petra restaurant in Canaves Oia, or Argo in Fira and Dimitris in Ammoudi are just a few of the many places to experience this magical moment. If your want to explore the island’s countryside, you can go to Selene in Pyrgos and Psaraki in Vlychada. And certainly don’t miss our Cooking Class and Wine Tasting experience!

You just can’t get enough of this place. That’s why you need to be ready for exploration and plan your journey well.
