Now, for the first time ever, classic drama-lovers, or simply visitors eager to experience Greek culture first-hand, have the opportunity to enjoy a theatrical performance of ancient Greek Drama with English and French overtitles. And not just any drama, but one of the most controversial pieces of ancient Greek literature that continues to be a topic of analysis and discussion to this day, almost 2,500 after its birth, Oedipus Rex.
Oedipus Rex will be staged by ‘Fimonoi’, a professional theatrical group that has the objective of inspiring Greece’s visitors, reserving classic Greek culture and ancient Drama and spreading its reputation across the world. As a result, ‘Fimonoi Stage’ was established to meet the growing need for cultural tourism, providing visitors with the unique opportunity to enjoy an ancient Greek play in the city the play was born, reminding the world of the role of Ancient Greek Literature in the European culture.
Oedipus Rex was written by famous Greek tragedian Sophocles, while the date of the writing remains unknown. The play tells the famous story of Oedipus who ends up murdering his father and marrying his own mother, fully unaware of the tragic circumstances, proving true an oracle that was given to his father shortly after Oedipus was born.
Oedipus Rex is often considered the greatest Greek tragedy, encapsulating masterfully all Greek tragedy elements; it has a likable protagonist, a sharp climax, expressive, rhythmic literary work, as well as a plethron of meaningful themes; it is without a doubt a drama that has stood the test of time!
The production runs from 30 May 2019 till 26 September 2019, every Thursday at 20:30 at Athinais Cultural Center, with a running time of 105 minutes (incl. a 15-minute intermission).
